Diane Keaton’s children posted Instagram tributes on Oct. 11, a year after her death from bacterial pneumonia. The posts reveal how the actress kept her final illness private, even as her family mourns publicly.

In a stark contrast to the actress’s long‑standing privacy, a friend told People that Diane Keaton’s health "declined very suddenly" during her final months, prompting her to withdraw from public life. Yet on Sunday, Oct. 11, both of her adopted children broke that silence with public Instagram tributes, underscoring the personal loss behind the star’s private battle.

What we know

According to Us Weekly, Diane Keaton died of bacterial pneumonia in 2025 at the age of 79. The actress had adopted her two children, Dexter White and Duke Keaton, when they were babies. Dexter, now 30, and Duke, 26, each posted separate Instagram messages on the first anniversary of their mother’s death.

Dexter’s post began, "One year without you, mom," and included a black‑and‑white photo of herself standing with Diane on her 2021 wedding day. She wrote that the loss feels "like yesterday and forever ago all at once" and expressed difficulty adjusting to a world without her mother’s presence.

"One year without you, mom," Dexter wrote.

Duke shared a carousel of three photos spanning years of time spent with Diane, captioning his post, "I love you Mom. Thinking of you every day." The tribute marked his first Instagram post, and he responded to comments from friends, including actress Sarah Paulson, who had posted her own tribute earlier that day.

Sarah Paulson’s comment read, "One year. Impossible. Laughing with you will always be what I remember most. I love you," and she added three heart emojis, which Duke mirrored.

Both children have previously used social media to commemorate their mother. In May, Dexter posted a carousel for Mother’s Day, describing her as missing “her voice, her hugs, her presence, and everything that made her home.”

Keaton’s adoption of Dexter and Duke as infants has been a well‑known aspect of her personal life, and both children have pursued creative careers—Dexter as an actress and Duke as an artist—while maintaining a low public profile until this anniversary.
